    From the House of Dead is a unique and representative Czech opera. It was composed by Leoš Janáček base on novel The House of the Dead by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This opera is a microcosm of all human suffering: punishment, oppression and despair. In this subject, I attempt to convey these suffering visually through stage design. This thesis is divided into following four parts: First, the study of the original novel includes research on the Tsarist exile system, as well as the author's life and creative process. Second, is the analysis of Czech opera, particularly Janáček's musical style, and how these musical characteristics are manifested in this opera. In the third part, I have analyzed the stage design of three Janáčeks operas which redesigned recent years and in the last part I explained my design for this opera.
